Pragmatics Based Textbooks: Do They Fulfil the Needs of Teachers and Students?

Secondary students must master not only grammar and text organization, but also pragmatic competence in the target language order to achieve communication competence. The ability express meaning beyond rules is referred as Teachers should provide materials that are appropriate for both learning goals needs of students. This study aimed determine types textbooks teachers require. It was a mixed-methods with sample 41 from Semarang secondary schools. data were gathered using Google Form analyzed quantitatively qualitatively. discovered 56.1% disagreed they used contained situational context communicative everyday use. 61% strongly agreed be effective use situations introduce various expressions based on context. There significant gap between required at time. majority respondents believed or pragmatics-based include information importance pragmatics. These have been met by existing textbooks. To summarize, require gamechanging textbook. researchers therefore encourage other educators create can support students’ expected outcome being able communicate comprehensively English.
